RE: AND **ALL** THAT WHILE, I THOUGHT I NEEDED A “MAN” TO VALIDATE MYSELF ;oD
Okay, Denison outline time…at Starbucks…thinking…
Here’s the start I emailed to Tim yesterday afternoon (and CC’d to Senators Burke, Coley and Tavares ;0/ … ;0)…
DENISON OUTLINE: Phase I—
TOPIC: Silence the Stigma!
“Evolutionary” process of recovery—learning to overcome fear of being different, so as to find and exercise self-acceptance…
- Instrumental role of self-acceptance within process of mental-health recovery;
- How I found my self-acceptance and learned to exercise it; and
- Impact self-acceptance has had on my life journey thus far.
Alrighty, I. am. thinking. ;0( Hmm…
Let’s see here…(I’m sure it will come to me ;0)…
Alright…we’ll start with the definition; that always helps—
I’m sitting here in the window at Starbucks and there’s a guy that just passed by—he’s talking to himself and doing the ticks and patterns that people with serious OCD have. He just made it in the door…it took about three minutes. Would’ve taken a “normal” person less than 30 seconds. I wonder what he was thinking when he was on his way in. Isn’t it weird that if he went to his psychologist and said he thought others were watching him and talking about him, at least in this instance, he would be right!
Because here I am, and that’s a what I’m doin’! Bet you that psychologist would say, “ohhh no! You must be paranoid because other people really couldn’t care less about you and what you do…” Hah! Yeah…maybe if you’re a normal person ;0) But trust me—if you’re “different”, they do stare, and they talk and joke and the whole gambit. Which surely does make self-acceptance all the more challenging now…doesn’t it? Okay Maris…F.O.C.U.S.
Hmm…ohh yeah, okay, so…definition! ;0)
Here we go—we’re gettin’ somewhere now! ;0) Hah…
Okay, as per dictionary.com—“acceptance”—noun:
- The act of taking or receiving something offered.
- Favorable reception; approval.
- The act of assenting or believing.
- The state of being accepted.
Alright I can work with this…but let’s see what the web has to say…
Wikipedia: “Self-acceptance” is defined as acceptance of self in spite of deficiencies.” —Sheppard (1979)
—Satisfaction with self
—Necessary for good mental-health, involving:
- A realistic, albeit subjective, awareness of one’s strengths and weaknesses.
—Results in an individual’s feeling about herself, that she is of “unique worth”.
Ahh, all good stuff! Yay for mental health! I’ll be back!
